Gloucester to celebrate Memorial Day with The Birth of Military Aviation
The Gloucester Sesquicentennial Civil War Committee will present The Birth of Military Aviation from 10 to 3 p.m. May 28 at the Main Street Library, 6920 Main St., Gloucester.
Special guests include Richard C. Kirkland, a retired pilot who served during World War II and the Korean conflict. His 69 helicopter rescues in Korea led to the movie and television series M*A*S*H.
John V. Quarstein will discuss his new book, titled "CSS Virginia Sink before Surrender," about the battle of the ironclads. An award-winning historian, preservationist, lecturer and author, he served as director of the Virginia War Museum for more than 30 years.
